Public Works Expo 2018

TU11 - Dare to Ask Session: Automated Vehicles: Potential Safety Issues Impacting Local Public Agencies

Aug 28, 2018 2:00pm ‐ Aug 28, 2018 2:50pm

Autonomous vehicle (AV) development is proceeding at a rapid pace. More focus is being given to vehicle operating systems and product safety and less to the safety of the systems within which AVs must function. AV producers are expecting local public agencies and state transportation agencies to adapt their transportation systems for the various new AV products. Join us for this Dare to Ask discussion of the challenges facing local and state agencies in trying to be ready to provide for public safety in the midst of this mobility revolution.

Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of this session, you will be better able to:

  • Identity potential safety issues related to AV technologies and transportation systems.
  • Determine what is expected of local and state governments in ensuring AV system safety.
  • Develop a plan to deal with transportation system safety issues related to AV technologies.
