The Safe, Accountable, Flexible, Efficient Transportation Equity Act: A Legacy for Users (SAFETEA-LU), which was signed into law on August 10, 2005, established the Highway Safety Improvement Program (HSIP) as a core Federal-aid program. The overall purpose of this program is to achieve a significant reduction in traffic fatalities and serious injuries on all public roads through the implementation of infrastructure-related highway safety improvements.

This program will feature case studies explaining how funding is made available for both low-cost, widespread improvements and higher-cost spot improvements on the state, federal and county levels. Learn more about how funding decisions are made, the balance between making low-cost and higher cost improvements and the benefits of having your safety priorities already identified for future funding opportunities.

After viewing this program, participants will be better able to:

Implement a data-driven roadway safety management process
Recognize how improved signing, improved pavement markings, the addition of guideposts, the addition of rumble strips and clear zone improvements can increase safety
Develop a systematic approach to safety improvement
