Each and every day, as Public Works professionals we are managing assets. We build, repair, operate, maintain, and replace the critical infrastructure that our citizens and customers rely on. We are managing these assets, but Asset Management aims to do more than just manage infrastructure. Infrastructure asset management aims to optimize assets using data and strategy to make better, more timely, more fiscally responsible decisions.

There is an abundance of valuable Asset Management resources readily available. APWA recognizes that Asset Management is important to its members and that there is an opportunity to assist members with advancing Asset Management in their respective organizations.

To explore the opportunity further, in 2015 an Asset Management Task Force (AMTF) was created. With leadership from past presidents, Larry Frevert and Larry Stevens, seven members were appointed from across North America to serve on the Task Force.

The AMTF has two primary goals:

Determine what APWA can do to further the efforts of implementing asset management for local governments across North America.
Develop the fundamental steps for establishing an asset management standard for North America.

The first step to achieving these goals is to start the conversation about asset management with APWA members through the presentation of this CLL. Throughout the CLL, the AMTF will engage participants by asking a series of questions aimed at determining where organizations are with asset management and where they are going. The results of these questions will guide APWA in determining what members need to maximize their asset management efforts and what it can do to help.

This CLL has something for those that have already started their asset management journeys as well as those that have not yet begun.

The CLL will discuss the following topics:

Asset Management Overview
Why Asset Management is important
How asset management applies across the municipality/organization/agency
Asset Management Standards and Methodologies
Examples of what basic and advanced Asset Management looks like within an organization using real municipal examples

After viewing this program, participants will be better able to:

Explain why Asset Management is important, utilize available resources and identify standards and methodologies.
Optimize assets using data and strategy to make better, more timely, more fiscally responsible decisions.
Explore opportunities to advance Asset Management in each participant’s respective organizations.
